In the time of Covid-19

As a brief introduction, my name is Lorena Zurbano and I am an educator (originally from Madrid) based in London, with a background in research in language learning.

A decade ago, when I first started this edublog, I was intending to switch my work as a school-based teacher/teacher trainer to language online tuition. Perhaps my studies as an online learner (MA in teaching Spanish as a foreign language) helped me to feel immediately comfortable in the new environment.

More recently, 3 years ago, we were informed of the sudden closure of  my daughters’ school, and after some discussions we decided to give her a choice between all the options available locally and she opted for Home Education (not so much Home-based learning though!) alongside most of her school friends. I kept working online supporting Alevels and GCSE tests taking learners and in the system. One thing I learnt is that if you wish to pass a test then tutors or school may help, but if you want to become a proficient language speaker, then this goal can not be achieved by taking tests and passing GCSEs. Even when you may achieve an A* in these standardised tests.

I can comfortably say that the last three years have been my Phd in education and HE was the best possible decision we have ever made as parents. As a family we are happier. One of the benefits among many is that we no longer need to fulfil school’s needs and have the freedom to follow the child's rhythms, strengths and interests. Of course, we also are able to travel off season to practice languages !

For the last year and since April 2019, inspired by my experience as a home educator, I have been working towards creating a learning space for multigenerational, mixed-aged, socially minded and with a students’ self-directed approach in mind- and I named the project Metaforlearning.

This is an ed research project, and a series of workshops run in three different locations (A drama school, a Leisure centre and a Museum), for young people to explore the principles of Self-Managed Learning, movement and art.

Since Sept 2019, we are based at RADA (Royal Academy of Dramatic Art) in central London, and offer workshops to young people following a personalised learning programme, either:

  •  Flexi-schooling
  • Self-directed ed
  • community-Learning (Self-Managed Learning),
  • Informal education
  • Home-based learning,
  • Unschooling.

In the times of Covid-19, there are further blended-learning opportunities being offered, including language learning opportunities- all ages and experience welcome!

Our virtual environment will be used for the needs of an active and participatory community; a space where people regardless of age may have a voice in its function. This is a space with a participatory culture.

if your interest is specifically in learning Spanish, please fill in this form:  FORM

If you wish to stay up-to-date with the project, please follow Meta4L on social media and check Meta4L's website:  www.metaforlearning.org

Thanks for reading.. it wasn’t that brief!

Top 10 tips for using Skype in the language classroom

Here is the official definition: "Skype is a little piece of software that lets you make free calls to anyone else on Skype, anywhere in the world.  In addition, you can use Skype to chat with other people, send files, make conference calls, video calls, and more - all over the Internet." What is Skype education? A free and easy way for teachers to open up their classroom. Meet new people, talk to experts, share ideas and create amazing learning experiences with teachers from around the world. MY EXPERIENCE Last year I was invited to teach Spanish to a grade 12 class (18-19 years old) in a High school in Texas via skype from my home in London. My aim with this project was to create  a list of do's in collaboration with a classteacher. This is what we came up with, our list of Do's:  1. share a collaborative doc that you can access at anytime. 2. take your time to test video and audio. 3. start sessions with a short introductory game or iceb...

DELE escolar- DELE for Young learners

The DELE junior has been designed for the needs of younger learners (11-17) wishing to have an official recognition of their ability to communicate in Spanish, granted by Instituto Cervantes on behalf of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport in Spain. There are many similarities with an IGCSE exam although the requirements for the Speaking and interaction test are much more challenging with just 20 min preparation time. This part of the test requires careful preparation.   Intro and first task Description of a photo (20 min preparation time).  The candidate will be asked a few questions often related to their experience as language learners as well as their family life that will help them relax and be prepared for the first task (this intro will not be assessed). For more details watch this youtube video that shows an example of the intro and first task: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25qbBChwOQ0&t=64s This Mind map shows possib...

FAQ for preparing GCSE and A-Levels Spanish

Last week I was asked what logistical questions students taking tests for Spanish always ask? These are my answers for the faq asked by students taking Higher tier papers. 1. ASSESSMENT CRITERIA. Understand assessment criteria for reaching best results. For instance, the information a student generates must be relevant to the topic or task they are performing in Spanish. Students tend to provide information that is not relevant. The reason for this is that students feel they need to keep talking/writing: more words more marks. The criteria for assessment makes it clear: more irrelevant information lower marks. 2. TIME RESTRICTIONS: Understanding that you do have time to perform the task. Because students feel under pressure there is no detailed planning when writing a piece of work. Therefore, the language usually is very poor in the first paragraphs. This doesnt give a good impression to the examiner. I encourage to use mind maps to explore accurate vocabulary before approach...
